After Franco’s death, in order to secure the “never again” resolve, Spain went through a complex and fragile transition period which forced its society into a type of divorce from the memories of the past and into the creation and manipulation of a new political and social memory. The rupture from that turbulent past made the arrival of democracy possible, but it left a gap in the collective memory, and several unanswered questions.
Recently, the debate about the country's historical memory has broken the silence that was imposed through the "Pact of Forgetting" during the transition period to democracy and has revived the possibility of finally confronting the past and recovering the social memory that has been in a state of oblivion.
