The course is composed of 4 units. Here is a brief description of each one and a direct path to them.
Unit 1: "Dos Españas; Dos Memorias"
Throughout this unit, the learning focus is more historical. It is a brief summary of Spain's most important historical events since 1939, from the end of the Civil War, to the attacks on the Madrid train system in 2004, giving major emphasis to those events that have endangered the situation regarding historical memory.
Unit 2: "Memoria, Aprendizaje y Olvido"
In this unit, we will analyze and synthesize the work that scholars have done about historical memory. We will be concentrating on a much more theoretical aspect of the topic, and as we read, we will be making connections, particularly to the issue of Spain's historical memory.
Unit 3: "El Debate de la Memoria"
In December 2007, the country made an important step by recognizing the victims of Francoism through the approval of the Historical Memory Law. In this unit, we will be analyzing that document and the changes and contradictions that it presents, as well as the reactions of a variety of social groups towards the controversial law.
Unit 4: "Narrativa y Arte de la Memoria"
During and after Franco's era, especially during the transition period, several artists from multidisciplinary fields were the voices that broke the silence and therefore, were the ones who influenced and convinced many social groups to confront the past. In this unit, we will be interpreting the work of several artists who expressed, in different ways, non-conventional perspectives about the Civil War.
